Why Visit Chopta

Let me start by first discussing why to visit the Chopta Tungnath trek in the first place. The natural beauty of the spot is charming, and while you can find similar beauty at other locations in Uttarakhand, Chopta offers something unique.

The main reason is that this spot offers you an ideal opportunity for visit without having to venture too far from civilization. Is it Safe to Visit Chopta?

An individual's own presence of mind, in my opinion, really determines whether a place is safe for them. But assuming you take reasonable precautions, Chopta is indeed a very safe place. Crime here is almost nonexistent, and the locals are extremely humble people who will do their best to ensure the safety of visitors.

As long as you drive safely and reasonably, avoid unnecessary disputes, and don’t wander around the wilderness alone, there’s nothing to worry about. If you’re planning to take the Tungnath temple trek or the Chandrashila trek, it’s important to stay on the marked trails and follow basic safety guidelines.

For those who want to combine both treks, the Tungnath Chandrashila trek from Delhi is an excellent choice, offering the perfect mix of adventure and breathtaking views while remaining accessible for trekkers of various experience levels.

How to Arrive at Chopta

Next, I will provide some details on how an individual can reach Chopta. I will break this down into several sections, such as how you can drive here on your own, take a bus, or rent a taxi, and how much it will cost. For explaining the route, I will assume Delhi as your starting point. However, even if you are coming from a different location, the journey till Rishikesh might vary slightly, but the rest of the route will still be the same.

Best way to Reach Chopta by Road

If you are traveling by your own vehicle, whether by car or bike, reaching Chopta is quite simple. There are a few routes that can be taken to reach here, but I will explain the two most commonly used ones.

chopta tour package

Route 1: Delhi - Meerut - Khatauli - Muzaffarnagar - Roorkee - Haridwar - Rishikesh - Devprayag - Srinagar - Rudraprayag - Agastamuni - Ukhimath - Duggalbitta - Chopta

This is the most commonly used route to reach Chopta. Starting from Delhi, you will travel about 250 kilometers until Rishikesh, depending on where you start from in Delhi. For this journey, you can either stick to the main highway or take the upper Ganga River road from Muradnagar.

After reaching Rishikesh, you will start ascending the hills towards Rudraprayag via Devprayag and Srinagar. About 35 kilometers after Rudraprayag, you will take a road that bifurcates towards Ukhimath from Kund. Continue on this road for another 35 kilometers to reach Chopta, passing through Ukhimath, Makku Bend, and Duggalbitta.

For those looking for a more organized trip, a Chopta tour package can be a convenient option. Many Chopta tour packages include transportation, making it easier to travel and explore. If you're interested in trekking, the Chopta Tungnath trek and Chopta Chandrashila trek are great options to experience the beauty of the area. For an even more challenging experience, you can embark on the Chandrashila summit trek, which offers stunning views and an exhilarating adventure.

Second Route

The second route for the journey, though less preferred, runs through the town of Lansdowne. The journey will be as mentioned below:

Delhi - Meerut - Khatauli - Bijnaur - Najibabad - Kotdwar - Lansdowne - Srinagar - Rudraprayag - Agastamuni - Ukhimath - Duggalbitta - Chopta

Following the second route, your journey to Khatauli from Delhi will be the same. However, after Khatauli, you will turn towards Bijnaur instead of continuing to Muzaffarnagar. You will keep driving in the plains till Kotdwar and then ascend to Lansdowne. After Lansdowne, you will travel another 125 kilometers to exit at Srinagar and then follow the same route to Chopta that I mentioned earlier.

Shortest Route to Chopta

Both of these roads are quite the same in length and travel time. It doesn’t matter which road you take; your travel time will still be around 12 to 13 hours. What you can do instead is take the main route to Chopta and return by the alternate route or vice versa.

Best way to Reach Chopta by Bus

Unfortunately, there is no direct bus to Chopta from any of the major cities. Therefore, the journey needs to be broken into several parts, and you will need to switch between buses and taxis. Your first stop will be the towns of either Haridwar or Rishikesh.

Getting a bus to either of these towns is not very difficult, and you can easily reach there. However, the journey from here on to Chopta becomes tricky and slightly inconvenient. Let me break it down step by step, assuming you have now arrived in Haridwar.

Best way to Reach Chopta from Haridwar

In Haridwar, you should head to the GMOU bus stand, which stands for Garhwal Mandal (Bus) Operators’ Union. It is located on the opposite side of the Railway Godown, or about a kilometer away from the main Haridwar bus stand on the left side once you exit the gates. Here, you will look for a bus heading towards Rudraprayag that can drop you there.

For those planning a more organized and convenient trip, you could consider a Chopta tour package that includes transportation options, making the journey smoother. If you're up for some adventure, you can opt for the Chopta Tungnath trek or the Chopta Chandrashila trek, both of which start from Chopta and lead to the breathtaking Chandrashila summit. The Chandrashila summit trek offers panoramic views, while a Chopta tour package might include a visit to Tungnath Temple as part of the trekking experience.

Best way to Reach Chopta from Rudraprayag

The journey from Haridwar to Rudraprayag will take around 7 to 8 hours. Most of the buses on this route are available in the morning, so make sure you reach in time. From Rudraprayag, there are no direct buses to Chopta, so you will need to find a shared taxi, which is usually either a Sumo or Bolero.

You can get the taxi from the bus stand itself, but it's a good idea to ask locals if you're not sure. If you can find a taxi that can take you all the way to Chopta, that would be ideal, but the chances of this happening are slim. Most likely, you will need to look for a taxi heading towards Ukhimath.

There are direct buses from ISBT Delhi to Rudraprayag, both overnight and during the day. So, if you're traveling from Delhi, I recommend taking the direct bus to Rudraprayag rather than stopping at Haridwar or Rishikesh first. This will save you time and effort.

Best way to Reach Chopta from Ukhimath

Once you're in Ukhimath, you can easily find a shared taxi heading to Chopta, no matter what time you arrive. Chopta is around 30 kilometers from Ukhimath, and the journey will take about 60 to 90 minutes.

During the summer months, there is a bus service from Ukhimath to Gopeshwar that passes through Chopta. This bus runs twice a day, but I wouldn’t recommend depending on it as it might not be very convenient. A better option is to use the shared taxis that run between Ukhimath and Chopta throughout the day, with services continuing until late evening.

If you're planning to trek, you could include the Chopta Tungnath trek or the Tungnath Temple trek in your itinerary. If you’re up for a more adventurous trek, consider the Chandrashila summit trek for a breathtaking view of the Himalayan peaks. Alternatively, you can also opt for a Chopta tour package, which could include these treks along with other beautiful sites to explore around Chopta.

Timings and Charges of the Transport

Considering the 7 to 8 hours it takes to reach Rudraprayag, most buses start in the morning. There may be a bus later in the day, but I’m not entirely sure. Additionally, if you're boarding a bus at 2 or 3 PM, it won’t be very helpful as you would reach Rudraprayag by 9 or 10 PM at night, with no place to stay.

So, please plan your journey such that you board the bus from Haridwar around 6 or 7 PM to reach Chopta on time. If you're running late, it’s better to spend the night in Haridwar and travel the following day.

The total bus fare to Chopta from Haridwar will be approximately Rs. 400. This includes Rs. 300 for the bus fare from Haridwar to Rudraprayag and around Rs. 100 for the shared taxis to Chopta.

If you’re looking for a more structured and convenient way to experience Chopta, you can consider booking a Chopta tour package. A Chopta tour package may include transportation, lodging, and even guided treks such as the Chopta Tungnath trek or the Chopta Chandrashila trek. For those seeking a more challenging and rewarding experience, the Chandrashila summit trek offers an unforgettable adventure.
